Tells us about the work you do with consultancy.

As a careers consultant in The Careers Group Consultancy, my work is typically split between 1to1s and delivering group-work to people typically outside of the university environment. I work with a diverse range of clients, who are at a variety of different stages in their careers. The challenging nature of the environment has allowed me to develop a range of skills that has increased my confidence and innovation within my college work. It also makes the work highly engaging. I could go from a 1to1 where I see the excitement in a client after helping them unlock the transferrable skills in their last 10 years of work, to a passionate discussion about assertiveness with a group of consultant doctors.

What is the most exciting project that you have worked on in the last six months?

Based on demand from doctors, the BMA presented us with the challenge of developing a day long workshop on time management. I was excited to help a group that I admire navigate and explore an area that I was particularly interested in and can seem a bit overwhelming. I worked with my colleague Hilary to create material that was interactive and gave clarity to the subject, both in understanding your own habits and practical implementation. The course was really well received and each time one of us runs it, we consult with each other and refine it further. Seeing the weight lift off delegates’ shoulders, makes it worth all the effort we put into the development.

How much opportunity is there to develop specific aspects of the role that interest you – e.g. writing and publishing material?

Broadly, Consultancy is a very flexible and supportive environment. Where I have expressed an interest in a type of work, subject or client group, the team has sought to give me those opportunities. Creativity is supported and clients certainly appreciate it. We often get positive feedback on the interactivity of our sessions. Speaking personally, I have valued the opportunity to work extensively with the London Council Internship Programme for recent graduates. This group has really impressed me and I have had to opportunity to deliver careers workshops, advise councils on how to get the most from the grads and produce videos about the scheme!

What would you say has been your biggest success/achievement in your role?

The aspect that I am most proud of has been the developing and delivery of professional workshops to a high standard. Medics in particular have high expectations and being able to consistently meet and exceed those expectations has been very rewarding. This is particularly important to me as training I have received prior to The Careers Group hasn’t always been that great, and so I work very hard to make sure that my sessions are engaging and helpful. This achievement is particularly enabled by the environment which allows me to employ the support of knowledgeable colleagues who want to help you do your best and always find time to talk.
